The India state govt of Maharashtra started issuing caste certificates over the Polygon blockchain to citizens that reside in Etapalli Village as a part of the Digital India campaign. In partnership with LegitDoc, the blockchain-based application, the government is in the process of rolling out 65,000 caste certificates to help in the process of delivering the governmental schemes and benefits. The Indian Administrative Service officer Shubham Gupta said that the Indian government is always on the lookout to implement new technologies that can help democratize the citizen services:

“Web3 takes the concept of democratization to a whole new level, whereby, data/information can not only made openly sharable but can be made openly unfalsifiable.”

As cited by Gupta in an article authored by LegitDoc CEO Neil Martis, the caste certificates issuance in the neutral web3 platforms aims to target 1.1 million economically challenged residents from the Gadchiroli district and more than 70% representing the tribal population. The verifiable certificates aim to deter the forgery efforts by bad actors that can falsely claim government-provided benefits for the underprivileged. The duo spoke about the importance of the Web3 protocols in protecting the public against defamation:

“In Web3, anyone can be part of the public blockchain network, but no single entity can control the network, thereby reducing the de la formation risk by both internal and external actors.”

Gupta added that the jurisdictions including Malta and Singapore implement similar initiatives:

“Therefore, it felt important for us to embrace web3 since it can aid us to achieve our mandate of true democratization of citizen services.”

As a part of the initiative, the LegitDoc platform fetched selective data from the government portal MahaOnline and uploaded it to the Polygon blockchain. The system can generate a QR code and certificate where it can be verified by the government departments. The state’s government previously implemented an Ethereum-based credentialing system that can provide a tamper-proof diploma certificate as a measure to avert forgery.

Earlier this quarter, the Indian finance giant Axis Bank made use of the government-backed blockcahin platform to issue contracts between two businesses. The Secured Logistics Document Exchange was developed by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry to serve as a digital document exchange platform that uses blockchain-based security protocols for security and authentication. The SLDE blockchain platform was used for a letter of credit which guarantees payment upon conditions:
