Filecoin and Harvard university will explore decentralzied technologies and ways to preserve digital information so let’s find out more in today’s latest blockchain news.
The Filecoin foundation for the Decentralized Web announced a new initiative with the help of Harvard Univerisity’s Library Innovation dubbed Democratizing Open Knowledge program and with its support, LIL plans to explore decentralzied technologies with can preserve digital information.
While there’s a lot of information to gather in 2022, it is hard to verify what is legitimate and where the amount of distrust towards mainstream media comes from. In the US, the trust and confidence levels in the media hit record lows and one of the latest surveys shows that 16% of the participants had quite a lot of confidence in today’s news publications and 11% trusted news on television. In the past few years, there was also a lot of misinformation and debates over the technical definitions.
For example, the term recession became quite a controversial subject over definition when the White House published two press releases showing the government’s description of the world’s meaning. The definition of the word recession however was then revised over a dozen times in one day. The Wikipedia revisions continue to this day. By simply leveraging the data saved on archive.org for any month of the year the data shows that the definition of the word changed a lot.
The Filecoin Foundation revealed that it will work with Harvard University and its Library Innovation Lab to preserve digital information via decentralized technologies. They will contribute to the Democratizing Open Knowledge program that aims to help libraries share knowledge via technology. The technologies include specific tools like the Filecoin network and the Interplanetary File System. FFDW President and Chair Marta Belcher said:
“FFDW is on a mission to preserve humanity’s most important information. This collaboration will enable the Library Innovation Lab to explore how decentralized technologies can solve real-world challenges to preserve critical data, and we’re thrilled to support the Library’s Democratizing Open Knowledge program.”
IPFS is a peer-to-peer system for storing and accessing files, applications, and websites in distributed file systems. Filecoin is an open-source blockchain created by Protocol Labs and it is built on top of the IFPS Distributed network. The Filecoin native crypto asset increased 47% against the US dollar and FIL is up 67.1% in the past two weeks. At the end of May, Protocol Labs detailed that it was working with the Maryland-based defense contractor to bring decentralized storage concepts to the space.
As per the FFDW announcement, LIL and FFDW plan to fight linkrot and explore the creation of dark archives but also protect valuable research data. LIL already built tools and websites so with the new collaboration efforts, they can establish trustworthy sources and long-term preservation of digital information.
