The central bank of Jamaica doubled down on the plans to design a digital version of its national currency and the institution claimed that the new product will benefit a considerable percentage of the residents that don’t have access to basic monetary services.
Jamaica launched CBDC to help the locals and it is yet another nation to pursue the launch of a central bank digital currency. The bank announced that everything is ready for the release of the product and the institution even chose a name – Jam-DEX. The Committee Chair and Deputy Governor of the Bank of JAmaica explain that the goal of the upcomign digital currency is to provide help for the people who are financially excluded from the monetary network:
“We still have a large percent of the population that remains outside of the formal financial system, the financially included.”
The executive outlined that the launch of Jam-Dex aims to transform the entire economy of the nation. The financial product will be great for those that are keen on using electronic methods of payment like debit or credit cards. The majority of the people also found the usage of cash to be a burden and even dangerous. Haynes revealed that the Bank of Jamaica conducted many tests on the CBDC during April and ensured fluency in the transaction. The Deputy Governor raised more hopes that the issues will be cleared In the next few weeks while the CBDC introduced to society in the upcomign months.
The Jamaican digital currency will become the third project in the region. The Bahamas launched its Sand Dollar in 2020 while Dcash was introduced as a CBDC for Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, St Kitts and Nevis, and The Grenadines. The Jamaican government also said that it will spread awareness and bolster the employment of the CBDC by airdropping $16 to the first 100,000 citizens that will set up a wallet after April 1.
The minister of Finance also said the main goal of the initaitive is to encourage the locals to use this product as an option to conduct transactions.
